Tis the season to be baking.....

I love to bake, especially at Christmas. It must be an inherited trait. Grandma L always makes goodies at Christmas (caramels and divinity are her specialty) and my Mom always made goodies, too. In fact that was usually our gift to our teacher every year. Each year I go through recipes trying to decide what goodies I will make. Then I stock up on all the ingredients and start baking. When I mention how much I have to get done before Christmas, most people think I'm crazy to still try to work in the baking...but to me it's relaxing and of course I always feel better after sampling the dough!

This year in addition to the usual goodies, I bought a kit to make a gingerbread house. I was so impressed - everything came in the kit (prebaked house pieces, icing, candy, etc) and all we had to do was put it together. I assembled the house and Jacob and Jenna helped decorate (although I did add icing icicles along the roofline of the house!). They had a ball...and it turned out to be pretty cute. It's now decorating our kitchen counter and they love showing it off to visitors.

The candies look like the same on our train. Love the icicles hanging off the roof! I have been baking more than usual this year, I guess in an attempt to be mom-like! So far I've made candy cane cookies, cut out cookies, fudge, and caramels. I am too afraid to attempt divinity... refer to Brenda if you wonder why I won't make it! :)

Did your caramels turn out? I've never gotten them to turn out right! And what's the divinity story???

I think I just gained 5 pounds reading this! The house is very cute, and I love the kids' concentration.

The caramels aren't too bad! soft, but not too soft, so i'm pretty proud of myself! i have to admit they are still sitting in the pan, not cut and wrapped... guess i'll add that to my to do list! brenda and i attempted divinity once... i believe that was the baking episode where we ended up throwing away the whole pan, not even attempting to clean it, it was such a disaster. correct me if i'm wrong brenda!

Yes, JIll. The divinity story is correct...what a disaster. Of course it was probably 80 degrees and humid...no wonder! I haven't made anything except 5 minute fudge.
